Weekday Study Day: The Myth of Sir Bevis and Southampton

Thursday 8 October 2026
10.30am - 2.30pm

Event Information

The late medieval period saw a flourishing of poems and stories associated with chivalry, gallantry and adventure. One highly popular story was that of Sir Bevis, a globetrotting tale of murder, enslavement, love and retribution. The poem was translated into a multitude of languages and was known across Europe. According to the story, Sir Bevis heralded from Southampton, and portions of the legend take place there too.

To celebrate Southampton’s most famous mythical son, we are delighted to host a short day of enlightening talks and performances exploring the background, setting and history of the legend. Talks will include an introduction to the composition and background of the story (Dr Lynn Forest-Hill), a dramatic reading of portions of the poem (Matt Garner and Zana Parker) and an investigation of the links between the Bevis myth and Southampton (Andy Skinner).

The talks will take place in the elegant Georgian Room and are scheduled between 10.30am and 2pm, with a break for lunch (not included).

Admission to the house is included on the day of the talk and attendees are able to enjoy a 10% discount in food and drink from the café. In addition, copies of Dr Lynn Forest-Hill’s translation of the story will be available for purchase. These can be reserved and paid for when paying for this ticket.
