SUMMARY:A Walk Through Southampton Rediscovered: Walking Tour with Andy Skinner
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this tour will begin at 10.30am rather than the previously advertised 11am. This is to allow time between the end of the tour and Richard Henry’s object handling activity (this can be booked at https://southamptonmuseumsandgallery.co.uk/events/southampton-rediscovered-object-handling/). \nThis tour is part of two events to mark the launch of ‘A Walk Through Southampton: Henry Englefield Rediscovered’. \nTo celebrate the publication of Andy Skinner and Richard Henry’s new book A Walk Through Southampton: Rediscovering Henry Englefield\, co-author Andy Skinner will be leading a new walk exploring the Southampton of Sir Henry Englefield and exploring many of the sites and scenes mentioned in Englefield’s 1801 volume A Walk Through Southampton. \nIn 1801 the antiquarian and astronomer Sir Henry Englefield wrote a beautifully illustrated walking tour leading readers through the streets of Southampton. He offered insights into the city’s fascinating historical past\, including some fanciful stories about the buildings he was exploring. Since then\, much of the fabric of the city has changed with many of the elements he highlighted having been removed through the slum clearances of the twentieth century and bombing during the Second World War. In this tour\, we retrace Sir Henry’s footsteps and examine key city sites\, such as the Bargate\, Watergate\, the town walls\, Church of All Saints\, Holy Rood Church\, the medieval friary and sugar house\, and the medieval vaults\, as well as other curiosities. \nThere is also an opportunity to purchase the new book. This can be reserved as part of the booking (£15.99 and paid for on the day of the event). \nRegrettably this tour is not suitable for people with mobility concerns. Please meet 10 minutes before the tour is due to begin in St Michael’s Square (in front of Tudor House). Please note that this tour will commence at 10.30am. \nCancellations \n\nIn the unlikely event that we cancel a session\, we will offer a full refund. Unfortunately tickets are otherwise non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to transfer your ticket to a friend if you cannot attend for any reason. \nIf you have any questions about the event please contact us at museums@southampton.gov.uk or call us on 023 8083 4536 (emails and phones are staffed weekdays 9am-5pm).

SUMMARY:A Walk Through Southampton Rediscovered: Object Handling Activity with Dr Richard Henry
DESCRIPTION:This activity is part of two events to mark the launch of ‘A Walk Through Southampton: Henry Englefield Rediscovered’. \nTo celebrate the publication of Andy Skinner and Richard Henry’s new book A Walk Through Southampton: Rediscovering Henry Englefield\, co-author and Curator of Archaeology Dr Richard Henry will be leading an intimate object-handling activity looking as some special archaeological treasures from the City collection\, exploring the archaeology mentioned in the new book. SUMMARY:Philosophy and Art Talk: What Does it Mean to be a Woman (Self)-Defining Womanhood? with Fiona Woollard
DESCRIPTION:Join leading philosophers from the University of Southampton for a series of engaging talks that open up ideas and questions related to present exhibits. Together\, we’ll explore how philosophical thinking can illuminate some everyday questions\, and raise some deeper questions too. \nOur programme of talks is as follows: \nSat 18 April: Are You Seeing What I’m Seeing? – Will McNeil\nWe can experience a sunset together. But it may seem very plausible that we cannot experience each other’s experiences of the sunset. For one thing\, those experiences might differ\, for example\, if only one of us is colourblind\, or short-sighted. The picture this paints is of a peculiar loneliness. Yet while it can feel intuitive that we’re cut off from each other in this way\, it can also seem deeply intuitive that experiences can be profoundly shared. Can we make sense of that? \nSat 2 May: The Nature and Value of Art – Brian McElwee\nWhat makes something art? Is there something that all art has in common? And how do different answers to these questions help in thinking about the value of art? \nSat 16 May: What Does it Mean to be a Woman (Self)-Defining Womanhood? – Fiona Woollard\nLots of people want a simple definition of ‘woman’\, but often what it means to be a woman is complex and personal. Can philosophy help us make sense of this complexity? \nThe University of Southampton are providing these talks for free\, with an opportunity to choose a donation amount to the Art Gallery amount below. The more you feel able to donate\, the easier it is for us to offer an exciting programme for as many people as possible. Thank you in advance for your support\, which really does make a huge difference. \nCancellations \nIn the unlikely event that we cancel a session\, we will offer a full refund. Unfortunately tickets are otherwise non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to transfer your ticket to a friend if you cannot attend for any reason. \nIf you have any questions about the event please contact us at museums@southampton.gov.uk or give us a ring at 023 8083 4536 (emails and phones are staffed weekdays 9am-5pm).

Here is your chance to take part in an interactive real ghost hunt at the iconic Tudor House with the award-winning Supernatural Tours. \nThe history of Tudor House spans overs an incredible 800 years starting with King John’s Palace and expanding to the Tudor House that we know today! \nTudor House has had many owners including John Whytegod\, Walter and Jane William and more notably Sir John Dawtrey who created the Tudor House which still stands to this day. \nThis fascinating building is also home to several ghosts. In fact\, the building is said to be so haunted that former custodians and owners have refused to enter certain parts of the building after dark! \nGhosts include a dark spirit that has been seen wandering the corridors causing disturbances to the spirit of a young lady\, who has been seen on the first floor. \nYou will be able to take part in experiments and use equipment as seen on TV with para-normal experts Andrew Frewing-House and James Kemp. Andrew conducted the first-ever paranormal investigation at Tudor House and continued to investigate the building over several years. He has witnessed many of the paranormal occurrences including the sighting of a Victorian Gentleman who walked through part of the building and disappeared. Andrews’ experiences and work at Tudor House has appeared on Radio and in magazines and feature a local book. \nJames has appeared on TV including an appearance on ITV1 and Radio across the UK and appeared in media. He has worked as a medium in the UK and the US. \nThe two have run the award-winning Southampton Ghost Tours for nearly two decades. \nThis event will include the use of equipment and participation in experiments as we discover if Tudor House is haunted. \nCancellations \nIn the unlikely event that we cancel a session\, we will offer a full refund. Unfortunately tickets are otherwise non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to transfer your ticket to a friend if you cannot attend for any reason. \nImage copyright Supernatural Tours

SUMMARY:Urban Sketching with Elwyn Edwards: Let's Draw People (and Pigeons)
DESCRIPTION:Urban sketching isn’t just about drawing streets and buildings. In this workshop we look at ways of animating our drawings by including people to show everyday life in the scenes we draw. In the first part of this workshop\, we will look at ways of drawing people quickly and how to suggest their movements and activities. We will also see how figures in a drawing can convey scale and atmosphere. In the after we will experiment with these techniques in the garden or outside the Tudor House Museum. \nThis workshop is one of four\, each of which can also be enjoyed individually. To book other dates listed below\, please click on a date below or return to the main page and scroll down in date order: \n\n28 March: Let’s Go Urban Sketching\n25 April: Urban Sketching: Let’s Play with Perspective\n30 May: Urban Sketching: Let’s Make it Colourful\n13 June: Urban Sketching: Let’s Draw People (& Pigeons)\n\nAll materials are provided. 10% discount in the museum café is included. \nCancellations \n\nIn the unlikely event that we cancel a session\, we will offer a full refund.
