Each session is different\, but it could be a talk\, tour or something entirely different! Look out for exciting activities on different weekdays! \nWe are all concerned to keep our city centres a vibrant place\, somewhere we enjoy visiting and can feel proud of. But many city centres across the UK are struggling. \nNearly a decade ago\, Janey took up the challenge of photographing her home town of Southampton. Shocked by the rapid changes in the city centre\, she began photographing the city and taking portraits of people she met. \nCity Centre Survival is the culmination of this project\, and explores how history\, changing fortunes and planning decisions affect the lives and outlook of people in towns and cities today. \nCity Centre Survival is also a limited edition book. Many claims about the ship are either inaccurate or based on questionable evidence\, but are repeated from one source to another. In this talk\, covering various aspects of the ship and including little known anecdotes\, Mark Chirnside explores some of those challenges and discusses some high profile misconceptions about the ship’s history. \nCopies of some of Mark’s books\, including his new publication Olympic & Titanic: Triumph and Disaster will be available for purchase at this talk. DESCRIPTION:Southampton was devastated by enemy bombing during the Second World War\, but also played a crucial role in many aspects of the war. In this special walking tour\, join historian and guide Andy Skinner for an exploration of Southampton’s Old Town with a specific focus on the story of Southampton during World War Two. You will spot areas above ground that were affected by bombing and descend into some of the medieval vaults that were used as air-raid shelters during the war. \nPlease meet 10 minutes before the tour start time in St Michael’s Square. This tour will last about 90 minutes. \nPlease be aware that in adverse weather the tour may be cancelled or postponed at short notice. Regrettably it is unsuitable for wheelchair users and those with mobility concerns. DESCRIPTION:When did you last give yourself time to pause with one artwork? \nDo you ever find yourself moving from one artwork to the next\, passing many by without giving them your full attention? \nWhat might you notice if you slowed down\, lingered a little longer and allowed yourself to connect more deeply with just one piece? \nResearch suggests that spending time with art and savouring the experience can support our wellbeing. This gentle\, 90-minute workshop invites you to slow down and experience one artwork from the gallery’s current exhibition more mindfully and intimately. Through guided visual meditation\, you’ll explore what you notice\, sense into your present-moment experience\, and respond through simple mark-making. \nLed by Alison Potter\, a mindfulness teacher registered with the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA)\, this session is an invitation to be curious\, let go of rushing and discover what can unfold when you give an artwork — and yourself — a little more time. \nNo previous mindfulness or artistic experience is necessary. \nThis session is offered free of charge as a pilot event. DESCRIPTION:Join a guide and ascend the Civic Centre’s iconic clock tower. Climb all 215 steps via a spiral staircase and discover the incredible story of its construction as well as gaining unparalleled views of the city. \nNew for 2026: There will be an opportunity to be in the bell chamber while the bells are ringing (subject to the bells being in operation). Please be aware that the bells are loud and sound up to about 85 decibels. Ear defenders are recommended and will be offered. \nPlease arrive ten minutes before the tour is due to start. Portions of the tour will be outside so please wear suitable clothing and footwear. The tour is suitable for people over 10yrs old and will last approximately 75 minutes. \nThis tour is not recommended for people who have: \n\nfear of heights\nmobility concerns\ndifficulties breathing\nmedication for heart conditions\na poor level of fitness\n\nFor your information: \n \nWe will be ascending and descending the tower by a narrow metal spiral staircase. Admission to the museum is included on the day of the session\, so you can make the most of your day with us! \nThis activity will take place in our lovely education room. It can get a bit tight for space though\, so if you are able to leave pushchairs outside we’d be very grateful! \nIn this session we’ll be travelling back to prehistory by finding more about how our ancestors in the stone age\, Bronze Age and Iron Age lived. Babies in arms may accompany a paying child free of charge; however\, they will only receive a gift from Father Christmas if a ticket has been purchased for them. \nEach child’s ticket includes: \n\nA visit to Father Christmas and a gift\nOne festive craft activity\nA hot chocolate or juice\nA festive biscuit in the café\n\nEach child may be accompanied by up to two adults. \nTickets also include admission to the museum on the day of your visit.
