Thursday 24 April 2025 @ 11am - 12.30pm
Thinking Thursdays is a weekday initiative from Southampton City Council Cultural Services, exploring the rich history and heritage of the town. Each session is different, but it could be a talk, tour or something entirely different!
Take a stroll around Elizabethan Southampton, it was a time of great change, Southampton merchants funded voyages to the New World which saw the founding of the British Empire and the East India Company. It was a time of privateering, refugees, and piracy, of fish, potatoes and woad. You will meet characters who helped shape the nations history: Lawrence Prowse, Judith de la Motte and Pocahontas, meet people from Portugal, France, the Low Countries. A time of religious upheaval, of Catholics and Protestants, of treason and the Spanish Armada.
This walk is presented as part of the University of Southampton AHRC project: Maritime Communities c1588-c1775.
Please meet in St Michael’s Square about ten minutes before the tour is due to start. Regrettably this tour is not suitable for people with mobility concerns. This tour may be cancelled or postponed at short notice in bad weather.
