Free Family Activities: From Cloth to Spitfires – A Journey Through Southampton at Work

Brought to you by the University of Southampton Business School and Southampton City Council, these family-friendly activities will take you on a journey through Southampton’s rich history as a bustling port city, its vibrant present with thriving industries, and its promising future in emerging fields like AI, biotech and clean energy.

Book onto two different FREE activities exploring the fascinating past, present and future of Southampton at work:

Family Activities (10.30am-12.30pm)

Using tools such as artefacts, LEGO, and giant maps, families will enjoy learning about the city’s fascinating past, exploring the current job landscape, and creating ideas for the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. The event will feature interactive activities, engaging discussions, and an optional walking tour, making it a fun and educational experience for all ages. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect, learn, and envision the future of our wonderful city together!

Family Walking Tour – The History of Jobs in Southampton (2-3.30pm)

Join historian Andy Skinner for a brand new walking tour of Southampton’s Old Town exploring stories of work in Southampton through the ages. What was the grossest job in town, which Southampton engineer was thought to be ‘in league with the devil’ and how meet Southampton’s ‘Dick Whittington’ and the amazing jobs he helped to create. This tour will include a visit to some of the city’s incredible medieval vaults and participants will get the chance to imagine future possibilities.

Regrettably the walking tour is not suitable for people with mobility concerns.

This event has been funded as part of the Make Your Place Enterprise Challenge and is designed for families to take part in together. For more details please contact s.e.campbell@soton.ac.uk.
