Tuesday 17 June 2025 @ 7.30pm - 8.30pm
Join historian and museums’ learning officer Andy Skinner for a talk exploring a fascinating part of Southampton’s history. Each talk is designed to be fun, accessible, and rooted in the history and archaeology collections of the city.
Isaac Watt’s hymn ‘O God, Our Help in Ages Past’ holds a central place in the story of Southampton and the tune for the hymn is routinely rung from the Civic Centre clock tower. But who was the man who wrote the hymn, how has the hymn been used since its creation and why is it still important today? This talk explores the Southampton of Isaac Watts’ time and the remarkable tale of the hymn’s Southampton links throughout the last 300 years.
