Weekday Wonderings Talk with Dr Cheryl Butler: ‘Incontinent of Her Body’: Women, Society & Morality in Tudor Southampton

Thursday 4 February 2027
11am - 12.30pm

Event Information

Weekday Wonderings is a weekday initiative from Southampton City Council Cultural Services, exploring the rich history and heritage of the town. Each session is different, but it could be a talk, tour or something entirely different! Look out for exciting activities on different weekdays!

Join historian Dr Cheryl Butler for this history talk in the beautiful Georgian Room. Admission to the museum is included on the day of the talk.

According to the mayor Knaplock, Southampton was a den of adultery and carnal fornication! Southampton had a licenced brothel, and founded charities as the result of the illicit affairs of prominent citizens. Today’s tabloid papers would have had a field day!

Cancellations

In the unlikely event that we cancel a session, we will offer a full refund. Unfortunately tickets are otherwise non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to transfer your ticket to a friend if you cannot attend for any reason.

If you have any questions about the event please contact us at museums@southampton.gov.uk or call us on 023 8083 4536 (emails and phones are staffed weekdays 9am-5pm).
